Nikolai Sergeyevich Golitsyn created his major work "Universal Military History" during his professorial and teaching activities at the Imperial Military Academy, where he headed the department of strategy and military history. Golitsyn's work became the first in Russia and one... of the first in Europe to attempt a complete and systematic exposition of universal military history. The work provides a complete and detailed overview of the wars and campaigns of great commanders, military-historical events in necessary connection with the contemporary history of the author: political, military art, the art and science of warfare, and military literature. Subsequently, the work was translated into German, and its author was elected a member of the Swedish Academy of Military Sciences.

The book has not been reissued since its first publication. This edition publishes the first part of the work - "Ancient World", devoted to the analysis of the central military conflicts of antiquity up to the wars of the Roman Empire.
